FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is the simplest way to move files between your computer and your hosting account. Think of it like drag-and-drop for your website—uploading and downloading is that easy.
Using an FTP client like FileZilla makes this process smoother. You can even pause and resume transfers if your internet connection wobbles. You can get FileZilla here.
Here’s what you need to know for connecting:
- Hostname – This is how your FTP client finds your server. For a main domain, it’s usually example.com; for a subdomain, it’s ftp.example.com.
- Hosting Details – Your cPanel username and password are used to log in.
- Port – Standard FTP connections use port 21.
- Directory – Your website files live in public_html. If your FTP client asks for a directory, use this.
