What Is An Addon Domain?

An addon domain is a fully functional domain that you can create from within your control panel. It’s like having multiple hosting packages, all managed through the same control panel. You can set up email addresses, forwarders, and more—just as you would for your primary domain. The main difference is that the files for both the primary and addon domains are managed within the same control panel and server.

Note: When visitors access your addon domain, there will be no indication that it is an addon domain. It will function as an independent website, with no references to the primary domain. For example, primarydomainname.com and addondomainname.com will appear as separate sites in your visitor’s browser.

For FTP access, the addon domain is linked to the primary domain only by the username, which typically appears as: addonexampledomain@primaryexample.com

You cannot create an addon domain if the DNS for the domain you want to add has not yet propagated.

Addon domains are organized similarly to subdomains in your file directory, but the addon domain’s URL appears as a standalone domain. Generally, changes to your addon domain’s files or DNS will not affect your other domains.

Although addon domains do not have their own cPanel, you can still create email accounts, set up redirects, install applications via Softaculous, create subdomains, and more. Web statistics for the addon domain can be found under the subdomain’s URL in the statistics section of cPanel.

How Do I Create An Addon Domain?

To add an addon domain, follow these steps:

  • Make sure the domain name you want to add is registered.
  • Check that your nameservers are pointing to your hosting account. If not, update the nameservers to:
  • If your nameservers are already set correctly, proceed to the next step.
  • Log in to your cPanel and click on “Domains” under the Domains section.

  • Click on “Create a New Domain.”
  • Enter the domain name (do not include HTTP or WWW).
  • Untick the “Share document root” checkbox if you want the addon and primary domains to have separate content.
  • Click the “Submit” button.

Your new domain has now been added! You can upload your website files to the specific addon folder created within the public_html directory.
